Thermophilic Bacillus Species
نویسنده
چکیده
The fatty acid composition of a thermophilic Bacillus sp. was altered by the addition of isobutyrate, isovalerate, a-methylbutyrate, leucine, and isoleucine to the growth medium. With isobutyrate, 81% of the fatty acids had 16 carbon atoms and 79% were iso-fatty acids with an even number of carbon atoms. With leucine, 58% of the fatty acids had 15 carbon atoms and 86% were iso-fatty acids with an odd number of carbon atoms. With isoleucine, 72% of the fatty acids had 17 carbon atoms and 88% were anteiso-fatty acids with an odd number of carbon atoms. Thus, by altering the composition of the growth medium, cells were produced in which the majority of the fatty acids had either 15, 16, or 17 carbons and belonged to each of the three groups of branched-chain fatty acids. The wide variation observed in the fatty acid composition makes it unlikely that any specific branched-chain fatty acid is required for vital functions.

Identity of Thermophilic Bacteria Isolated from Arctic Soils and Waters.
The most intensive study of the aerobic sporeforming bacteria (Smith et al., 1952) has revealed the lack of a clear-cut distinction between thermophilic and mesophilic species of the genus Bacius. It was found, however, that of the many cultures studied, only those belonging to the species BaciUlus stearotenwophilus would grow at 65 C. Some cultures of Bacillus coagulans, Bacius subtilie, Bacil...
متن کاملDistribution of thermophilic aerobic sporeforming bacteria in food ingredients.
Samples of sugar, starch, spices, and miscellaneous products were tested for thermophilic sporeformers of Bacillus to determine the dominant species present. Surface colonies selected at random were identified. Six species of Bacillus were isolated: B. stearothermophilus, B. coagulans, B. licheniformis, B. subtilis, B. circulans, and B. pumilus. Samples of starch and pepper were tested for ther...
متن کاملThe phylogenetic diversity of thermophilic members of the genus Bacillus as revealed by 16S rDNA analysis.
Sixteen thermophilic strains of the genus Bacillus, representing eight validly described and six invalidly described species, as well as one unassigned strain, were investigated by comparative 16S rDNA analyses and the sequences compared to the existing database for the genera Bacillus and Alicyclobacillus. The majority of strains were found to cluster in two groups represented by B. stearother...
متن کاملA polyphasic taxonomic study of thermophilic bacilli from shallow, marine vents.
Eighty-seven thermophilic, aerobic, spore-forming bacteria were isolated from shallow, marine, thermal vents of the Eolian Islands (Italy) and tested for a broad spectrum of phenotypic characteristics. A numerical taxonomy study was performed on these isolates and 8 thermophilic Bacillus and Geobacillus reference strains by 89 selected features. Results from cluster analysis showed the formatio...
متن کاملIsolation and characterization of a thermophilic Bacillus sp. with protease activity isolated from hot spring of Tarabalo, Odisha, India
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Thermophilic bacteria are less studied but important group of microorganisms due to their ability to produce industrial enzymes. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, thermophilic bacteria were isolated from hot spring of Tarabalo, India. A bacterium that could tolerate high temperatures was characterized by morphology, biochemistry and sequencing of its 16S rRNA gene...
متن کاملIsolation and Characterization of Thermophilic Alkaline Proteases Resistant to Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate and Ethylene Diamine Tetraacetic Acid from Bacillus sp. GUS1
Thermophilic Bacillus sp. GUS1, isolated from a soil sample obtained from citrus garden, produced at least three proteases as detected by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and zymogram analysis. The enzymes were stable in the alkaline pH range (8.0-12.0), with the optimum temperature and pH range of the proteases being 70ºC and 6.0-12.0, respectively. All th...
